AATB Statement Regarding Cryostorage Tank Failures

March 22, 2018

The American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) is committed to the health and safety of all donor tissue recipients, as well as the safe storage of personal reproductive tissues including sperm, eggs, and embryos. In response to the recent reports of cryostorage tank failures, the AATB would like to reiterate that best practice reproductive tissue handling and storage procedures are well covered under the AATB’s Standards for Tissue Banking. While AATB accredited facilities must adhere to the AATB Standards and undergo on-site inspections to verify compliance, the operational and internal quality assurance protocols of individual facilities providing cryogenic storage can vary by organization.

The AATB recommends that all individuals carefully review the credentials, policies, and safety procedures of any cryogenic storage facility (licensed physician or otherwise) prior to entrusting that organization with the safekeeping of their precious reproductive tissue. A list of AATB accredited facilities can be found here: AATB Accredited Bank Search.
