This presentation will provide an overview of organ donation and how it connects to the other side, tissue donation. We will explore the differences in brain death and circulatory death and how approach and authorization takes place. This session will go in to further detail about HLA, the criteria of hemodilution, organ allocation, preservation goals, how conversations go with recovering surgeons and how all of these factors impact OR times and shift tissue recovery times.
Heather Phillips joined Nevada Donor Network as the Manager of Surgical Services in 2015. Her primary goal was to strengthen the team of caring and compassionate donation specialists serving the Las Vegas valley, and neighboring areas. While her career in the Organ Procurement Organizational field began in Texas, Heather’s introduction to the immeasurable value of donation began in her native California. She witnessed the Gift of Life bestowed on her father, a kidney recipient. A number of years later, she would find herself on the other side of the same valuable coin. She played a nurturing role in ushering close relatives through the process of giving when her nephew became a multiple organ donor at the age 22. These experiences left indelible impressions and solidified her mission of helping others navigate their way through this delicate process.
Earning both CTP and CTBS board certifications while working with leading organizations has kept the core values of donation through education at the forefront of her efforts. It is also what drives Heather to give her best to her colleagues and company, so that Nevada Donor Network may come to be known as one of the premier OPOs in the world.
