Advancing Tissue Safety Through Better Understanding of Bioburden Data

July 13, 2026

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new editorial, “Uses of Human Tissue Bioburden Data,” authored by AATB’s Dr. Melissa Greenwald and Eduardo Nunes, highlighting the importance of human tissue bioburden information in supporting tissue safety and quality practices.

The editorial provides valuable perspective on the collection and application of bioburden culture data in human tissue banking, emphasizing its role in process validation, monitoring, and the multiple layers of safety that support transplantation. The publication is accompanied by related research from AATB Affiliate Member Eurofins DPT, “Microbial Contamination in Deceased Musculoskeletal Tissue Donors: A Large-Scale US Analysis of Infection Risk,” which provides additional insight into bioburden trends and their role in advancing tissue safety practices.

AATB supported open-access publication of this editorial to help ensure broad accessibility for the tissue banking community. We congratulate Dr. Melissa Greenwald and Eduardo Nunes on this important contribution and thank them for advancing knowledge that supports safe and effective tissue transplantation.
