12 Years of a Lifesaving Mission

AATB Vice President & Chief Science Officer, Roman Hitchev, MD, returned to the AATB home office last month after completing a successful pediatric scoliosis surgery mission trip in his home country of Bulgaria. Dr. Hitchev regularly participates in these trips as part of a charitable program that he co-founded in 2007. This year marks the 12-year anniversary of that program, the Euro-Atlantic Transplant Alliance (EATA)-Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) Mission. The Mission was founded with the intent to provide surgical care to disadvantaged children with advanced spinal deformities in Bulgaria.
Tissue Policy Group (TPG) Update

Subsequent to the AATB TPG in-person meeting in October, the AATB and the AATB TPG requested a meeting with the FDA to further discuss the 36-month discretionary period. The FDA promptly responded to that request, and the joint meeting occurred April 3, 2019. In addition to the in-person meeting with the FDA, the AATB TPG hosted a series of Hill visits and a luncheon briefing on April 4, 2019.
30 Years of CTBS

In 1976, a group of tissue banking professionals established the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) in Bethesda, Maryland to represent and drive advancement in the tissue banking industry. In 1984, the first edition of the AATB Standards for Tissue Banking was published to establish uniform best practices and begin to set expectations for the emerging industry.

During the TPG in-person meeting in October, the focus will be determining the Congressional outreach agenda for the next two years. A key component of that agenda will likely be the advancement of policies related to how the Food and Drug Administration (FDA or Agency) responds after the 36-month enforcement discretion period ends.
2018 QDEW Provides Education and Connection to Purpose

From April 30-May 2, nearly 300 tissue banking professionals gathered in Baltimore, MD to learn about and discuss issues and considerations surrounding quality and donor eligibility. The AATB Quality & Donor Eligibility Workshop is an annual meeting where a segment of the tissue banking community can come together to network and connect, while also learning and sharing new ideas and best practices. Attendees consist of a diverse mix of industry professionals, including both those new to tissue banking, and tissue banking veterans.
The Ride of His Life

On January 1, 2018, the Donate Life Rose Parade® float coasted down Colorado Boulevard as part of the 129th Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. The theme of this year's Rose Parade was Making a Difference, and no other float embodied that theme better than the Donate Life float, which won the 2018 Theme Award for the most outstanding presentation of the Rose Parade theme.

Education Passport: A One-Stop Shop for Your CEUs

The Education Passport is the AATB's one-stop shop for educational programming. It houses the AATB’s educational offerings — including past webinars, conferences, and presentations — and displays important updates. Over 4,100 AATB members and interested community members have become Education Passport users since it launched in 2009. The Education Passport houses 304 hours of recorded audio and 12,388 slides, and users have accessed webinars and presentations 11,125 times
